The Hon. John Howard AC, SSI

The Honourable John Winston Howard served as the 25th Prime Minister of Australia from March 1996 to November 2007. He has been Australia’s second longest serving Prime Minister. Mr Howard led the center/right Liberal Party for a total of 16 years. He was a member of the House of Representatives for 33 years. Prior to becoming PM. Mr Howard had extensive senior experience in both government and opposition. He served as both Treasurer in a previous government and led his party in opposition for a number of years.

Justin Fox, Editorial Director of the Harvard Business Review

Justin Fox is editorial director of the Harvard Business Review Group and the Author of The Myth of the Rational Market. Fox’s book is a history of the flawed and dangerous theories that have come to dominate economics in the last 50 years – most notably that markets are rational. The book was named a New York Times Notable book for 2009 and Amazon’s Best Business Book for the same year.

Fox is a nimble economics and finance journalist who writes about complex problems with great depth and breadth. He blogs at the Harvard Business Review Blog and contributes regularly to Time, where he previously wrote a weekly column. He started the magazine’s influential Curious Capitalist blog at Time.com. For over a decade before that he was a writer and editor at Fortune Magazine. Fox is a regular commentator on the nightly business report on PBS.

The Hon Bill Shorten MP, Assistant Treasurer and Minister for Financial Services and Superannuation

 

 

Bill Shorten is the Assistant Treasurer and Minister for Financial Services and Superannuation in the Gillard Labor Government. He was re-elected as the Member for Maribyrnong at the 2010 Federal Election held on 21 August 2010 and sworn in to the Ministry on 14 September 2010. Before his promotion to the Ministry after the 2010 election, Bill was the Parliamentary Secretary for Disabilities, Children’s Services and Victorian Bushfire reconstruction. After working as a solicitor for law firm Maurice Blackburn Cashman, Bill became an organiser with the Australian Workers’ Union (AWU) in 1994. During his time at the union, Bill held key leadership positions including State Secretary of the AWU Victoria Branch from 1997 to 2006 and the National Secretary from 2001 to 2007.

 

Senator Mathias Cormann, Shadow Assistant Treasurer and Shadow Minister for Superannuation and Financial Services

Mathias was born in Eupen, Belgium in 1970. Following two visits to Perth in 1994 Mathias made the decision to migrate to Australia permanently. Mathias became involved as a Liberal Party volunteer in the lead-up to the successful 1996 State election campaign. Following that election Mathias worked as a Ministerial Chief of Staff and then a Senior Adviser to then Western Australian Premier Richard Court before taking on a role as an Adviser with the then Justice and Customs Minister Chris Ellison. Between 2003 and 2007 Mathias worked for major Western Australian health insurer HBF in a range of senior management roles, before his appointment to the Senate. In September 2008 Mathias was appointed Shadow Parliamentary Secretary for Health Administration. He was appointed Shadow Minister for Employment Participation, Apprenticeships and Training in December 2009. In September 2010 Mathias was appointed Shadow Assistant Treasurer and Shadow Minister for Financial Services and Superannuation.

Greg Cooper, CEO of Schroders

 

Greg is Chief Executive Officer for Schroder Investment Management Australia Limited. Prior to joining Schroders in 2000 Greg was the Head of the actuarial and asset consulting practice for a major consulting firm in Asia. At Schroders, and in prior roles, he has also worked in the UK, Hong Kong and Singapore.  Greg commenced his investment career in 1992. He is a Fellow of the Institute of Actuaries of Australia and the UK and has a Bachelor of Economics (Actuarial Studies), Macquarie university.  Greg is Ambassador for the Australian Indigenous Education Foundation.

 
John Van Der Wielen, Managing Director Wealth, Australia and New Zealand Banking Group (ANZ)

John Van Der Wielen has more than 25 years experience in financial services including senior executive roles in General Insurance, Life Insurance, Wealth Management and Banking in Australia and Europe.

Prior to joining ANZ in July 2010, John was with Lloyds Banking Group plc where he was Managing Director Clerical Medical, Halifax Life and European Financial Services - Lloyds’ specialist wealth businesses. Previously, Mr Van Der Wielen held a number of executive positions in wealth management in Australia including as a member of the Executive Board at HBOS Australia, CEO of St Andrews Australia and State Manager (WA & SA) at Fortis. Born in Australia, Mr Van Der Wielen has an MBA from the University of Western Australia and is a Fellow of the Institute of Company Directors.

 

Jim Minto, Managing Director of Tower Australia

 

Jim Minto was appointed as the Managing Director of TOWER Australia in November 2006 having previously been Group Managing Director of TOWER Limited overseeing the trans-Tasman TOWER businesses prior to company separating along geographic lines.

A Chartered Accountant, Mr Minto holds a number of other directorships and appointments and has been active in industry bodies throughout his career. He has recently been elected to the Board of the Association of Super Funds of Australia (ASFA).

Mr Minto joined TOWER in New Zealand in 1988 as Managing Director the Group’s Trust business. He led several other TOWER businesses in New Zealand before taking up the role of Chief Executive Officer of TOWER Australia in November 2002. In March 2005, he was appointed Group Managing Director of the trans-Tasman TOWER Limited Group until the November 2006 demerger when he took up the TOWER Australia role.

Jim Minto is a strong public advocate for the social importance of the life insurance industry to the people of Australia.

 

Steve Tucker, CEO of MLC and NAB Wealth

 

Steve was appointed CEO of MLC in 2004 and is a member of the NAB Group Executive Committee. MLC & NAB Wealth, which includes the recent acquisitions of Aviva and JBWere, provides investment, superannuation, insurance and private wealth solutions to individual investors and corporate customers. MLC also offers quality financial planning and advice through its financial planning networks.

Steve joined MLC in 1988 and has held a number of senior roles including heading up MLC’s Retail Investments business and leading MLC’s Advice businesses, where he was responsible for MLC’s partnership with financial advisers.

Steve’s extensive experience in the wealth management industry means he is ideally placed to provide leadership and insight into the evolution of this industry. Over recent years, MLC has led the industry transition towards a fee for advice model, a process it began in 2006 when MLC first challenged the industry to drop commissions, improve transparency and engender greater trust in the advice profession.

Steve is a Director on a number of NAB Company Boards. He is also a Director on the FSC Board, a Member of the FPA, a Fellow of Finsia and a Senior Associate of the ABA.
